The
seminar focused on the current situation in the Arctic region,
bringing together the various views regarding the present and future
trends of the region.
Among others speakers and panel members included: Liisa Jaakonsaari (Member of the European Parliament),
Hannele Pokka (Permanent Secretary, Ministry of the Environment), Scott
Brandon (Head of The Political-Economic Affairs Section, US Embassy
Helsinki), Ulrik Tideström (Minister Counsellor, Deputy Head of
Mission, Embassy of Sweden Helsinki) Hannu Halinen (Arctic Ambassador,
Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland).

STETE
organized an information flash "Kyrgyzstan - towards democracy or chaos?"
in Parliament´s Visitors' Centre / Kansalaisinfo. Parliamentary elections and different scenarious
of Kyrgyzstan´s future were discussed among other issues. Speakers
included Harri Kämäräinen (director of Eastern Europe
and Central Asian Unit, MFA), Kimmo Kiljunen (MP, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's Special Representative on Central
Asia), election observers Georgi Bobokhidze and Eeva Suhonen and Salla Nazarenko (freelance journalist). Krista
Kiuru (MP, STETE´s chair) opened the event and made introduction

August at the Lohja City Hal. This year seminar concerned immigration in Finland. Speakers

Nordic Forum for Security Policy 2010:
26.-28.4.2010.
What
is the role of international cooperation in providing security in the
Baltic Sea Region? Does it provide participating
countries additional resources to tackle issues of environment,
social and health care, and cultural cooperation? How countries
stem difficulties on their way to free, safe and just society? These
among other questions were discussed on the Nordic Forum for Security
Policy 2010 held in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Development
strategies for the whole region, challenges in realization of the
partnership projects, border control cooperation, Belarus in the Baltic
Sea cooperation, and new initiatives on security issues – were
just some of the questions that were discussed during the forum´s
first session. At the second session participants shared their
experience of tackling social and political problems in their
countries, such as corruption, media development, discrimination of
ethnic minority groups and other topical issues. Forum also provided
discussions in three parallel working groups: environment, social and
health care, and cultural cooperation. Forum brought
together recognized experts, practitioners and scholars to
facilitate more productive discussions and ideas.
The
Nordic Forum for Security Policy (Finnish Committee for European
Security, STETE and Swedish OSCE-network, OSSE-nätverket) was
organised in co-operation with local partners Norden - Association for
Cooperation with Nordic Countries, Center of International and Regional
Policy (CIRP), and German Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. STETE coordinates

Year
2009 was the 60th anniversary of signing the Geneva Conventions which
covers the basis of International Humanitarian Law. To the
honourable of latterly finished anniversary Finnish Red Cross,
Åbo Akademi Universitys's Institute for Human Rights and the
Finnish Committee for European Security (STETE) organized a festive
seminar The 1945 Geneva Conventions Revisited: Reflections on Current
Challenges to International Humanitarian Law. The seminar took place at the Parliament's Old Auditorium. It
consisted from speeches of Finnish professionals from the field of
International Humanitarian Law and humanitarian activity. The seminar
was held in English.
